Action-figure Ben, now with battle damage!

Just got back from playing squash with Craig…. For those of you out there who aren’t familiar with the sport, think of racquetball with a dead ball (so there’s more running) and more limits on where you can hit it (so there’s more skill required). I won 4 of the 7 games that we played over the course of an hour or so.

And if you were thinking it’s a low impact sport - I subluxated (partially dislocated) my left shoulder in the second game, tweaked my lower back, and did a little somethin’ somethin’ to my right knee. Waking up tomorrow will be oh so much fun.

But at least I have the monkey (the trophy Craig and I play for each time out).

Where there is no joy…. Ah, well, it’s on to hoping for next year, I guess.

Unrequited rivalry

For those with no interest in college athletics, you may want to skip this post.

I’ve lived in the DC area since mid 1998, having moved here from the southern part of heaven (Chapel Hill, NC) to attend graduate school at the University of Maryland, College Park. When I first arrived, I was ambivalent towards Maryland sports in general and basketball in particular; I supported the volleyball team (as I try to do wherever I go), but that was about it.

Tired, Sore, and Happy

Sunday, November 23rd, 2003

I just got back from a USAV fellowship tournament - sort of a preseason tourney. Playing men’s B/BB, we went 5-3 on the day, ending with the team’s best record for a day ever, hurray. [that accounts for the happy]

I set all day, two games from a 5-1 and the rest as half of a 6-2 - passing was a little off for the first half of the day, but picked up for the last four games. [that's the tired]

As for the sore - well, I haven’t played in something like four months… coming off a break like that to run my butt off all day may feel good today, but I can already tell tomorrow’s not going to be a whole lot of fun.

Played in the first Milkshakes tournament of the year yesterday - Blind Date. The weather was gorgeous; despite the heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, the field was almost completely dry by the time my partner Sharon and I played our first match (we were team 5). Got a fair bit of sun, and had my worst tournament ever at 0-8, -64 or so point differential. Also had a great time, seeing people I’ve missed over the winter and meeting new ones. All in all, it was a fantastic beginning to the season.
