My last squash match as a single!

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

OK, the impending wedding is starting to sink in. I was playing squash with Craig a little earlier when I realized that this was my last squash match as a single man. It was not a great match to end my single life on - a good match, yes, but not a great one. Craig won, 3-2 (after being up 2-0).

And why, pray tell, is squash not an Olympic sport? Or racquetball, for that matter? I mean, c’mon - there’s got to be room for a couple of sports in which people run around in an enclosed space while wielding sticks and banging into walls. What’s not to love?

Miserable failure

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

Wow. Just - wow. I hadn’t been planning on running today, so as I sat watching the Olympics a little earlier (mmm, ultra-high quality volleyball!), I was thinking about what I could do to at least pretend to myself that I’d done a little cardio work today. Maybe Rebecca’s and Richard’s posts from the last week or so had stuck in my head, but I realized it’d been forever since I took out my jump rope and skipped a bit. So I threw on the old tennis shoes, cleared a space off the deck (darn falling branches and leaves), and started at it.

I couldn’t even make it ten minutes. Sigh. I guess that’s just one more component I’ll have to add to my fitness program - especially when I start to play volleyball more frequently (hey look, the post came full circle! Go eternal recurrence of the narrative same!)

Delay

Sunday, August 15th, 2004

Sorry, everybody, but the Garmin post will be delayed til tomorrow - it’s been a hectic day (an hour of squash this morning (which I won, yay!), followed by helping a friend just back in from Afghanistan pick up some of his stuff), so I haven’t been able to finish up the post quite yet.

No run - just squash. Well, I guess I could count the seemingly endless sprints from squash as a run, but I wasn’t really keeping track of how far or how long each one lasted….

Great weather

Sunday, July 11th, 2004

Today’s been beautiful so far - low 80°s, moderate humidity, nice and sunny. Word on the street has it there may be some showers early in the afternoon, but it should be nice from 4pm til sundown.

In other words, it was great weather for me to get out and play some volleyball for the first time since February. Some of my old vb friends were playing reverse coed at a local park, so I swung by and joined in for a few hours - I hadn’t realized how much I missed it until today, so now I’m looking at the tournament schedule for the rest of the summer and trying to figure out where I can work a tourney day in.

What with that, however, I haven’t run yet - I figure I’ll head out for a quick three miles just before sunset to round out my highest-mileage-week-ever (yay!)

Climbing

Wednesday, June 16th, 2004

So I was originally scheduled to do two miles today, but due to some last-minute scheduling from one of my best men, I ended up having to go in to work early so that I could drive up to campus for a climbing/belaying clinic tonight.

After a short rain delay during which I took out some frustrations on the squash court, our small class of four had a pretty darn good time learning the basics of the gear, techniques, and protocols involved in climbing at Maryland’s wall (which our instructor proudly proclaimed as “the tallest outdoor tower at a university on the east coast,” or something like that). We got some practical experience climbing and belaying each other, and aside from a brief twinge from my sometimes-subluxated left shoulder, I had a really good time. Still, I’m looking forward to tomorrow morning’s run - I’m just getting to the point where I really don’t want to miss a day of running (which is both a good and a bad thing).
