Not really a Reading post, but: wow.

Richard Feynman was in many ways an amazing man; if you haven’t read his works, you should run right out and get ‘em. If you have, then I think you’ll agree with me that the end of this essay is a fitting tribute to him.

I’ve really enjoyed peeking in on Languagehat for several months now, and over the last week or so he’s posted two things that’ve seemed especially interesting. The more recent is Learning Egyptian, in which LH talks about the new book on reading and understanding hieroglyphics that he’s been studying. I’ve been mildly interested in hieroglyphics for several years now, but that interest got ramped up a bit in this past year as I read a history of Cairo and a book about the deciphering of Mayan hieroglyphics - the subject is incredible, so I may just have to go out and pick up the book LH is talking about (How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-By-Step Guide to Teach Yourself by Mark Collier and Bill Manley).

The other post that I found interesting was this: Language-Learning Blog, in which LH calls his readers’ attention to Alaric Radosh’s English blog about his experiences learning Chinese (he also has a Chinese blog). Alaric uses his English blog to discuss the techniques he employs as he works on his Chinese, and so far it’s pretty cool (though it’s only been up for a few weeks).

I just got the Tenacious D CD Tenacious D - some parts are hilarious; some not so much.

I have to say, though, “Wonderboy” is a remarkable piece, and “Tribute” (the more famous single) is frickin’ amazing. I’m all psyched up to see Jack Black’s School of Rock now.

Not really a grumble - we’re going to see Guys and Dolls at a dinner theater tonight, and I’m overly excited for it. It’s my favorite musical, after all, and this will be the first time I’ve ever seen it live (I only know it from the movie and soundtracks - go Brando!)

Woohoo!
