The book has arrived!

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

I spent Thursday and Friday in DC at my company’s annual anniversary event - we had loads of fun, as you might be able to tell from these pics. After getting home around 2am on Saturday morning, I crashed… and when I woke up on Saturday, I discovered that the author copies of my book, Practical REST on Rails 2 Projects, had been delivered on Friday. It looks like you can go ahead and order it from Amazon, or wait a bit longer for it to show up in your local bookstore - but finally, the wait is (really) over!

National Book Awards

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

The National Book Awards were presented last night - I haven’t read many of the finalists this year (and none of the winners), but I do want to point out Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese. It’s the first graphic novel ever to make it that far, and it’s fantastic (in both senses of the word).

One small step for a graphic novel - one giant leap for sequential art.

NaShoStoWriMo

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

I’ve wanted to do NaNoWriMo (the site’s been majorly lagging since Nov 1st) for a couple of years now, but something always seems to stand in the way. This year is no exception, as I’m busy 3 nights out of the week and have pretty-well-booked weekends for the whole month. Not to be entirely dissuaded, however, I’ve decided to create my own month-long writing event: NaShoStoWriMo. As you might be able to guess, it’s National Short Story Writing Month. Where NaNoWriMo asks people to create a 50,000-word novel in a month, my goal is a little less lofty. I’m going to try to produce a 12,500-word short story before December 1st.

And no, you can’t read it, because it’ll be entirely crap - but that’s sort of the point. NaShoStoWriMo is all about getting something started and finished, just to complete it. It’s about quantity, not quality.

Wish me luck.

Blue?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2004

Can I just say that PRINTED BLUE TEXT is one of the most distracting things ever in a book? I’m reading something now that I’d like if I could keep from being disturbed by the color of the text every couple of minutes. Sheesh. It’s not even a book you’d think would be pushing the boundaries of design - it’s a popularization of some psychological theory (which brings with it a whole separate set of frustrations).

Library of Congress

Of the many blogs I read on a daily basis (thank you, RSS aggregators of the world!), there are a few that I enjoy above and beyond the rest. Posts in these blogs may be infrequent (ahem, Zeldman) or outside my area of expertise, but there’s just something about the way the blogger connects with the audience (i.e., me) that I really appreciate.
