That’s what today’s run was. High humidity and low 80s made for a decent running environment, but something’s just been askew for the last week. Today’s four miler was just wretched - high heartrate, low speed, and about four pounds of sweat. At least tomorrow’s can’t be worse - right? Right?
On tap later: six miles on Saturday, and the Richmond Muddy Buddy on Sunday (for three more miles). Fun, fun. Oh, and I’m two weeks away from the Official Start of my marathon training (which is, at this point, more intimidating than fun).
I just stumbled upon this blog googling the garmin forerunner to see if anybody had the desktop software running under wine. (You’re the number one hit for “forerunner software linux wine!”)
I saw your post about the garmin losing gps. I also live in a moderately-wooded DC suburb and was disappointed with the GPS (this is freaky). I would lose the GPS four or five times on a 4-mile run. I read somewhere that it works better on your upper arm (use the extension strap). Now I love it. Most days it doesn’t lose GPS at all. (If it has rained the night before and the leaves are wet, it might lose it once in a run.)
I’m also training for a marathon (again freaky) and this morning’s 10 miler was absolutely *brutal*. I estimate 1000% humidity.

The Richmond Muddy Buddy looks like fun. Have a blast! I can’t wait to read the race report.
April-Anne - the report’s half done. I’ll try to get it finished tomorrow, but for now I’m exhausted.
Greg - Welcome! Never thought I’d be ranked so highly for that particular search term, especially since I don’t talk about Linux or wine (drinkable or executable) very often… I’ll have to try out the forearm placement, but it’ll be a tough sell given how much I love the Nike Triax Elite I’m running with now.
Which marathon are you training for? Hopefully the next few runs will be better….
Training for the marine corps marathon. I’m calling Saturday a weather anomaly. I did the elliptical trainer on Sunday to give my legs a break (and enjoy air conditioned comfort!) and didn’t have a problem. I hadn’t used the elliptical trainer in about 2 months. My pulse was about 15-20 bpm lower for the same settings, so I know I’m making progress.
By the way, I put it on my upper arm (not my forearm). I hadn’t read enough of your blog to see you’d moved on to a new GPS, but if you go back, this should help. There’s also a software update that’s supposed to improve tracking, but I haven’t needed that.
Greg
Glad to hear the elliptical worked out better for you. I’m going to try an easy three miles tomorrow morning (assuming I can wake up early enough) to see how things feel. If this keeps up for much longer, though, I may have to go see a doctor. Sigh.
I’m using a non-GPS speed-and-distance device now, and it’s great - I’m loving the heart rate monitor that my Forerunner lacked, and it doesn’t matter what the weather or location’s like for the inertial footpod. Being a gadget freak, though, I’m sure I’ll get around to trying the alternative placement with the Garmin sooner or later.
