Whoa, freaky

Friday, July 15th, 2005

I just googled myself to see how culann was doing (so I’m vain, sue me) - and surprise of surprises, I found another Ben Scofield who does web development. I found a couple of usenet posts from last year, and they’re a little scary (talking about having upwards of 30 iframes on a single page, for instance), but it’s still web work.

Small world, I guess.

Terrible, just terrible

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005

That’s what today’s run was. High humidity and low 80s made for a decent running environment, but something’s just been askew for the last week. Today’s four miler was just wretched - high heartrate, low speed, and about four pounds of sweat. At least tomorrow’s can’t be worse - right? Right?

On tap later: six miles on Saturday, and the Richmond Muddy Buddy on Sunday (for three more miles). Fun, fun. Oh, and I’m two weeks away from the Official Start of my marathon training (which is, at this point, more intimidating than fun).

Jetlag and thunder

The two great tastes that taste so great together that I haven’t run since Saturday’s 4-of-6 attempt.

Maybe in the morning.

In the meantime, enjoy the photo of Lacie and me atop of fantastic hippo statue at the San Diego Zoo. The hippo exhibit at SD includes a large viewing wall as one side of the hippo’s lake, so you can watch him (or her, depending on which hippo’s in the tank at the time) swim around much more gracefully than they can move on land. It’s a real treat.

Runs from heck

I don’t know, but there’s something about running here that has just killed me the last two times out - and one of ‘em was on a treadmill.

I ran 4 miles on the hotel treadmill on Thursday and just about died (or so it felt). Not being one to learn quickly from my mistakes, I went out on the roads for my 6-miler this morning. I didn’t think it’d be tough, given that the route I was taking was mostlye flat… but about a mile and a half in, I started suffering in a major way. After two and a half miles, I stopped at a drugstore to grab some water, then turned around and ran back towards the hotel. After a mile and a half of that, I’d had just about enough and walked the rest of the way, feeling like complete crap the whole time.

And to make matters worse, as I climbed the hill into the hotel parking lot, my calf cramped up. I’m guessing some combination of dehydration and suboptimal eating over the last few days (darn vacation food) combined to make this my Worst Run Ever, but I won’t be sure until next week. I’m taking tomorrow off (and flying home), and will see what I can see with a run on the W&OD trail at home on Monday. Hopefully that’ll take the bad taste out of my mouth from the last two efforts.

First day in LA

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

Wow… and I thought DC traffic was bad.

We left San Diego on Tuesday, around 1pm (grabbing some fish tacos from the original Rubio’s on the way out - mmm). Around 5 hours later, we arrived at our hotel in Agoura Hills (just north of Malibu - mmm). The traffic was unsurprisingly atrocious, from I-5 to CA-73 to I-405. The only real positive of the trip was a quick stop in Capistrano - it was a neat little town, even if we didn’t have the time to stop in at the mission and see the famous swallows.

Today was another traffic-y day - after my four miler this morning (argh, hills = bad), Lacie and I drove into LA proper to visit the LA County Museum of Art, the current host for the traveling Tutankhamen exhibition. We grabbed a few minutes with the La Brea tar pits before wandering into the exhibition, which was nifty (if a little crowded for my tastes).

On the way home, we found out that Lacie and the rest of the bride’s half of the wedding party were having dinner in Santa Monica, so I dropped her off there and drove up the gorgeous Pacific Coast Highway to get back to the hotel area for dinner with the guys. Cut to a couple of hours later and I’m here, writing this, and I’m exhausted - and with the exhaustion, I’m hoping any readers will cut me some slack for incoherence, typos, or ungrammatical constructions in the above - not that there aren’t those in my normal posts, but at least I’ve got an excuse this time.

Four miles tomorrow, maybe a quick trip to the LA Zoo (more on that in another post), and a rehearsal dinner - hurray for busy days.
