Long run

June 11, 2005 – 6:28 pm

Today was the day - I did five miles for the first time in a long time. It ended up being a mixed bag - I felt good during the run (and I could’ve kept going for a while), but I had two problems: I had a devil of a time keeping my heartrate in my target zone (under 161), and I think I have the beginnings of a blister on my right big toe.

Taking the latter first, I finally broke down and bought some real runnin’ socks - no more cotton, seam-having bad boys for me. I’ll be road testing ‘em on tomorrow’s 3-miler, but I’m pretty sure that they’ll far surpass my old ones.

I’m not sure how much I should be concerned about the heartrate thing. The route I ran today is the flattest I ever run, with only a couple of really long, extremely shallow inclines and declines. I wasn’t running terribly fast (especially at the end, when I was desperately trying to lower my HR). I didn’t *feel* like I was working that hard at any point, but the gear doesn’t lie. I’m thinking I should probably do a reality check for my max heartrate to see if it’s significantly different than the formulas predict - but if it isn’t, I guess I’ll just have to trudge along as slowly as I can to keep my HR low. Sigh.

  2. I hope the new socks are better. ~ As for the heart rate issue, I’m sure the weather is not helping. Just wait a few days for the crazy humidity to pass and then your rate might go down.
