Whew, it’s been a while since I summarized a honeymoon day, hasn’t it? To get me back in the mood, here’s an easy one - the travel day we took to get from Sorrento (ah, natural beauty) to Rome (wow, would you look at that history!).
Ah, travelin’ day. After all the excitement of Day 4 in Pompeii, we just had to leave Sorrento. How could we top all that, hmm? Anyways, we took off from the hotel at 1030 to catch the 1130 train to Naples (with the eventual goal of making our 1230 reservation to Rome). All seemed well until we actually got to Naples, and discovered that I’d read our reservation incorrectly. We were due to arrive in Rome at 1230 - and that train had left an hour before. Sigh. Happily, however, we were able to jump onto a Rome-bound train at 1245 and all was right with the world… or at least, it was once the train left the station and all the “salespeople” stopped coming into our compartment harassing us to buy lighters (on a non-smoking train, no less). It was enough to make us happy that we didn’t visit Naples this trip.
Anyways, two hours later we arrive in Rome, hop in a taxi, and experience the joy that is driving through the pedestrian-mobbed streets of downtown Rome. We got out at our hotel (the Diplomatic - highly recommended, by the way, as is the Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento), unpacked, and promptly took a nap. Once we woke up, we walked 10 minutes to a fantastic little place for dinner where I finally got to order in Italian (and Lacie had what she still considers her best dish of the trip, a particularly lovely version of fettucine with porcini mushrooms). After dinner, we walked over to the Spanish Steps and then back to the hotel for some shut-eye before doing some serious sightseeing on the morrow.
