Training (ha!) Update

Wednesday, October 27th, 2004

Not a whole lot to update on, actually - between a nasty cold and a huge project that’s requiring some long hours at the office, I’ve only gotten in two miles this week (and an hour of hard-fought squash with my buddy Craig (which I won (eat hot justice, Craig!))).

Things should start picking up this weekend. Keep on truckin’ everybody!

Day 6 - Rome

Sunday, October 24th, 2004

Whew! Lots of time to… reflect, yeah… on the honeymoon. When last we left our heroic couple, Lacie and I had just arrived in Rome. For our first full day in the city, we planned (with the help of our Rough Guide to Italy) to hit the highlights of ancient Rome.

How do you know when you’re done?

Thursday, October 21st, 2004

The first thing you’re supposed to do when you start the GTD system is to collect all the ‘open loops’ in your life - everything at work, at home, and anywhere in between that you have to do; everything that occupies any space in your mind at all. The collection phase consists of gathering physical representations (even if it’s just a scrawl on a piece of paper) of all these projects and todos and dumping it all into a a physical inbox. Processing is verboten during the collection phase; you only get to start deciding what to do with each piece once you’ve gotten everything.

But how do you know you’ve gotten everything? How do you know when you’re done?

Where’s Ben?

Monday, October 18th, 2004

You ever feel like you’re in one of those “Where’s Waldo?” pictures? Like you should be out there in front of everything, but you’ve somehow gotten lost in the muddle? That’s where I’ve been for the last month or so - especially with the runnin’. In a desperate attempt to break out of this downward spiral of not-running, I finally broke down and registered for my first 5k, on November 14th (yay!). Here’s hoping it keeps me motivated.

And for all those who’ve kept running while I’ve been gone - congratulations! You all rock - especially Marshall with his 50-miler, April-Anne with her half-marathon, Susan with her 5k, and Dianna with her marathon - woohoo!

(anybody else I’ve missed - I’m sorry! Congrats to you, too!)

Update: Ack! This is what I get when I’m not paying attention - I screwed up above and said Marshall’d racewalked a 50k; it was actually a 50-miler, so sorry for the mistake and even more congrats for the impressive distance!

Staying on the wagon

Monday, October 18th, 2004

So, I’ve talked a little about some of the nifty parts of the GTD system, and I’ve pointed to at least one of the better sites dealing with it out there. If you’re anything like me, though, you’ll have run out and jumped into this with both feet - spending a day or two gathering and processing all your open loops, creating your lists, and feeling really good about yourself.

If you’re that much like me, though, you might be facing the first real obstacle, though - staying on the GTD wagon. It’s all too easy to forget to delete an entry from your Next Actions list once you’ve done it - or to fail to add a longer-term goal to your Projects list - or to record something you’ve delegated to your Waiting For list. That’s where the Weekly Review comes in.
