Lots o’ Stuff

OK, since this’ll probably be my last post before Lacie and I take off, I figure it’ll be pretty comprehensive. To wit:

- Shame, shame on me! I’ve only run once this week, and that was only for 2.5 miles. Everything’s just been so hectic, what with aftermath and honeymoon and all - I’m really, really looking forward to flying out tomorrow so that I’ll have the chance to run again, if nothing else :)

- Speaking of, I’ve found a couple of good resources for running info in Italy (and elsewhere internationally, it looks like). Slow Travel, Runner’s World’s Travel section, and Run the Planet all have good stuff, so if you’re going to be travelling anytime soon take a look.

- re: Susan and Cookie. The story goes like this: a number of people left gifts at the reception. Given that Lacie and I weren’t heading home after the night’s events (we instead went to a fantastic bed & breakfast in Ellicott City, Maryland), a couple of Lacie’s parents’ friends loaded the reception gifts into their minivan for us to pick up later.

After the next day’s brunch, said friends brought the gifts over and we transferred them to my (still-decorated, I might add) car for the trip home. Once we got home and rested a bit, Lacie and I started opening things. Everything went smoothly through about two-thirds of the gifts, at which point we ran into a rather larger present with the following cryptic card:

“From Susan and Cookie - Have a great day!”

Now, I couldn’t remember any Susan or Cookie at the wedding. Lacie couldn’t either. We called her parents’ friends to see if there’d been a mistake, since their daughter had gotten married recently too (perhaps one of her gifts fell in with ours?), but they were convinced that no such mixup occurred. We called Lacie’s mom, but she didn’t know who these people were. We called my parents - who were still driving back to NC - to the same result. Finally, we decided it had to be one of our friends playing a (cruel but hilarious) joke on us.

At this point, we got out the guestbook and the rehearsal dinner journal to compare handwriting. I thought the ‘y’s looked suspiciously similar to our friend Jenni’s handwriting, so I called her fiancee Doug and asked, “Doug - have you now, or ever, been referred to by the name ‘Cookie’?” He, of course, denied the whole thing, and on continued questioning convinced us that they were innocent.

And there we left it… until the next day. Lacie started talking about the wedding with her boss Suzanne, and it somehow was revealed that Suzanne and her partner N (nicknamed Cookie, which we did not know) were the guilt parties. It turns out that Suzanne spells her name ‘Susan’ sometimes, oddly enough. Wouldn’t that be like me spelling my name ‘Benn’ occasionally? Just for kicks? Oh, well - mystery solved, and Lacie and I have a new trick to play on our friends at their weddings.
