OK, OK - we’ve been in Sorrento since Sunday (after taking off from Dulles Saturday afternoon), and I’m finally getting around to writing up a post. Not sure when I’ll get it online, but whaddya want from a guy on his luna di miele?
This post has been delayed for two major reasons: Lacie and I have been totally exhausted every night from a combination of jet lag and continuous activity (even on our so-called ‘rest day’, as you’ll hear shortly), and the complete absence of any running-like activity on my part. Each night I’ve gone to bed with the best of intentions, but come morning I’ve been hit so hard with the jet lag I just can’t get out of bed. It’s getting better, though, so I’m hoping I’ll have the willpower and fortitude to get out and about once we start the Rome leg of our trip.
So, now that the lack-of-running apologetics are dealt with, on to the trip update!
We took off from Dulles at 1815 EDT, bound for Milan - about 45 minutes after our scheduled departure. We were able to make up most of the lost time during the flight, though, and landed just after 0800 local time (0200 EDT). This was not a happy flight, however; I got maybe two hours sleep onboard, and it was just all-around uncomfortable for both Lacie and me.
From Milan, we caught a 1000 flight to Naples - and the less said about that the better. Let’s just move on to our landing at 1130, grabbing our bags, and getting to the next leg of our journey - the bus to Sorrento. I’m pretty sure there were some spectacular views here (we passed by Mount Vesuvius, for instance), but we both missed them since we were falling asleep the whole time. We finally arrived in Sorrento around 1300 local time - or 0700 Sunday morning by our internal clocks. If you’ve ever wondered, 14 hours of travelling is not the most fun two people can have together. But we got here, and we checked into our hotel (the Bellevue Syrene, on a cliffside above the Bay of Naples), and took a nap, and all was well with the world.
That night, we stayed close to the hotel, having dinner at a restaurant only three blocks away and wandering through the tourist-oriented streets* until happening upon a gelateria and having some fantastic strawberry and watermelon gelato. When we at last got back to the hotel, we slept like a couple of logs… until, day 2.
TO BE CONTINUED…
* Sorrento is an entirely tourism-driven town, it seems, so this phrase may not narrow down where we were precisely enough. Let’s just say the streets we were on could’ve been paved in postcards and commemorative t-shirts, and leave it at that, shall we?
Day 1 pictures taken: 5 (and they were all pretty bad)
Total pictures taken: 5
You know, sometimes there are better things to do than run–like sleep:)
