And we’re off

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

Hurray! I didn’t get out this morning (ended up going into work early instead of braving the cold - Susan’s more courageous than I am. Once I got home, however, I laced up my shoes and hit the streets for a 2.5 mile loop around the neighborhood - no iPod, no Garmin, just me and the road. It was great to be back, though I could tell my running-fitness has suffered from the layoff.

I finished up the day with an hour of squash with Craig - he won, 4-2 (sigh). All in all, today was an excellent way to get back on the fitness track.

Certification

Monday, September 20th, 2004

OK, I’m back from two weeks in Italy - refreshed, renergized, and ready to go. So what did I do on my first day back at work? Read a bit over at xprogramming.com, a resource I found through Ron Jeffries’ book Extreme Programming Adventures in C#, and then spent an hour and some change taking the Certified Usability Analyst exam from Human Factors International. It looks like I passed pretty handily, though I wasn’t too happy with some of the questions and possible answers (for a company that teaches survey design (among other topics) HFI sure wrote up some less-than-optimal questions on this particular exam). I guess this means I get to add a little somethin’ somethin’ to my resume now….

It’s odd, though, that since I took the last of the four classes in the certification track several months ago (and came out of the experience totally focused on usability), I’ve spent the last month and a half dealing with and thinking about primarily development topics - in particular, agile methods. Sure didn’t see that one coming.

Anyways, now that all the big events are behind me (wedding, honeymoon, etc.), I’m rededicating myself (again, yay!) to this site. Look for new content here soon.

Here we go again!

I’m starting to get excited - wanna know why?

Tomorrow’s the big day for running again. After almost three weeks off the roads, I’m finally going to head out again in the morning and see what everything feels like. I can’t wait, woohoo!

Overambitious?

Well, I’m back! I’ve got a couple more summaries already done and a bunch more to do, but I’ll try to slip ‘em in with more regular running-type content now. Sorry for the honeymoon diversion :)

Speaking of running - I didn’t get any done over the past two weeks. Between the jet lag, the constant need to see something else, and the tiredness from all that sightseeing at the end of the day, I just never got around to lacing up my shoes and hitting the streets - not in Sorrento, in Rome, or in Siena. Imagine my surprise, then, when I got home yesterday and found I’d lost four pounds. I guess all the walking we did was an adequate substitute for the daily run, ‘cuz I know the loss wasn’t from a dietary cutback. Mmmm, italian food.

Anyways, it’s 0230 and I’m chipper as a bunny after falling asleep at 2000 last night. Darn time changes. Maybe I’ll make a run to the grocery store to replace our depleted pantry while Lacie sleeps….

Day 4 - Pompeii

Friday, September 17th, 2004

Well, it’s been a while since I worked on these summaries - we’ve left Rome (which was chock full of excitement, as you’ll see in the reports ahead) and have just finished our first full day in Siena. I imagine I’ll be able to catch up with the reports before we leave, though, since it looks like we’ll be hotel-bound for the next two days. Lacie’s not feeling too well, unfortunately, so we won’t be doing the touring of Tuscany that we thought we would…. But enough of that - on to the Day 4 summary!
