Where’s Ben?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

So, it may have been obvious that I’ve been relatively absent from this blog for the last several weeks (and some time before that, actually). I’ve got an excuse! Really, I do! I got married on Saturday, and up until the day itself had been workin’ on stuff for the rehearsal and ceremony. (You may ask why I’m posting now, when most normal grooms would be on the honeymoon - well, Lacie and I are working this week before taking off for two weeks in Italy this Saturday. Yay!)

Beyond that, however, I’ve been splitting my computer time between a couple of different projects. Most of my blogging energy has gone towards my running blog, through which I’ve discovered some really interesting things about community on the web. Work, of course, has been a relatively constant time sink, but beyond that I’ve been focusing on two learning projects: PHP 5 and C#.

I spent a few weeks at the beginning of August taking a look at the brand-spakin’ new release of PHP 5, and I have to say I was impressed. It was easy to work with, quick to develop with, and (thank goodness) finally had access modifiers for class members. I worked up a prototype for a web app in it (that I’m still looking for a home for - anyone know of a good host who has PHP 5 installed?), and all in all was pretty happy.

And then, I turned to C#. I’ve been meaning to dive into .NET for a couple of years now, given that I’ve been a classic ASP developer since I was hired at Nextel back in 2000. I kept putting it off, though, when I saw how lousy the generated HTML was for server controls, and when the pressure of quick-delivery projects stayed fairly constant. This month, however, that pressure has eased a bit, so I decided to just take a look at the platform to see what it could do. At the same time, I was itching to put into practice some agile methods (test-driven development, etc.), so a couple of weeks ago I buckled down and started reading and experimenting.

Now, I’m hooked. I’m still learning more daily (of course), but I’m at the point where I know enough to be dangerous and I want to use these technologies and processes for as many projects as possible. Developing is fun, again - something that it hasn’t been very much of for a while now. As I’m working out the intricacies of building an MVC app without relying on the (still crap) ASP.NET server control system, I’m just really enjoying myself.

So basically, I’ve been too head-down in coding and books to post much here; one Lacie and I get back from the honeymoon (mmmm, honeymoon), I expect to resume a more regular schedule. Given my renewed enthusiasm for the internals of development, I also anticipate that the rejuvenated culann.com will have a more noticeable coding presence - the technical content won’t just be web and design stuff any more. Feel free to check back in a few weeks - hopefully what’s coming won’t disappoint!

The Wedding Post

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

So, it’s been two days now, and I’ve had a little time to reflect on the events of the weekend. It’s still a little difficult to believe that Lacie and I are really, truly married now - after such a long time planning, everything went so quickly that it was hard to grasp the significance of it all as it happened. We’ve had some nice talks about the events of the day, though, and I think it’s all starting to sink in (or fade away :) for both of us. For those of you who’re interested, I’ll include a full report below. For those of you who’re just here for the running… Well, that part of the weekend I’ll leave above the “More…” link.

I hit the sack pretty soon after the rehearsal dinner on Friday, and slept in ’til around 8am on Saturday morning. Lacie was up at her parents’ house Friday night, so I woke up and puttered around the house all by my lonesome for a while, watching some of the Olympics and just generally wasting time before heading out to the W&OD Trail for what I hoped would be a 7 miler - you know, just to settle my nerves a bit and finish off the running week on a good note.

The run itself started out well; I was beginning a new audiobook (for those of you who enjoy young adult literature, definitely pick up Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus books - The Amulet of Samarkand and his newest, The Golem’s Eye, the latter of which I’m now about an hour into), and the weather was warm but not too much so. I was about 3 miles from the car, though, when my stomach began to hurt. I didn’t think much of it and kept going, turning around at 3.5 miles - but within the next half mile (still 3 miles from the car), I was in some major discomfort. I walked for a mile, ran half a mile, and walked the last mile to the car before speeding home. I’m still not sure what went wrong (I’m thinking it might’ve been a holdover from the weird eating schedule of the night before), but I was not a happy camper on that particular run.

(Temporary) Signoff

Just back from the rehearsal and accompanying dinner - aside: I think I may be in a blogger’s rut. It seems like every other entry (at least) lately begins with me “just being back from” somewhere. While I guess that means that I’m right on top of the action, blogging it as soon as possible after the fact, I’m also wondering if perhaps I should vary things a bit more in the future - maybe take some time to reflect on an event before posting, etc. Oh, well, I’ll worry about that after the wedding :)

The evening’s festivities were great fun, allowing both Lacie and me to see friends we’ve not seen for a while, talk with the people we love, and generally just enjoy the pre-wedding time. I’m at home now, by myself (Lacie’s at her folks’ house for the night), and I’m about ready to hit the sack - I’ve hung up the tux, finished my preparations for tomorrow, and as far as I know I’m good to go. I think, then, that I’ll be off the air for at least tomorrow and very possibly Sunday as well. I’ll try to post a full report of the weekend’s events after the fact, though, so if you’re interested it’ll be there. Thanks for the kind wishes, everyone, and have a great weekend! Oh, and wish me luck on my long run in the morning - it’d suck to show up to the venue with, say, a turned ankle or something.

My last squash match as a single!

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

OK, the impending wedding is starting to sink in. I was playing squash with Craig a little earlier when I realized that this was my last squash match as a single man. It was not a great match to end my single life on - a good match, yes, but not a great one. Craig won, 3-2 (after being up 2-0).

And why, pray tell, is squash not an Olympic sport? Or racquetball, for that matter? I mean, c’mon - there’s got to be room for a couple of sports in which people run around in an enclosed space while wielding sticks and banging into walls. What’s not to love?

Miserable failure

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

Wow. Just - wow. I hadn’t been planning on running today, so as I sat watching the Olympics a little earlier (mmm, ultra-high quality volleyball!), I was thinking about what I could do to at least pretend to myself that I’d done a little cardio work today. Maybe Rebecca’s and Richard’s posts from the last week or so had stuck in my head, but I realized it’d been forever since I took out my jump rope and skipped a bit. So I threw on the old tennis shoes, cleared a space off the deck (darn falling branches and leaves), and started at it.

I couldn’t even make it ten minutes. Sigh. I guess that’s just one more component I’ll have to add to my fitness program - especially when I start to play volleyball more frequently (hey look, the post came full circle! Go eternal recurrence of the narrative same!)
