Possible bailing

Thursday, July 22nd, 2004

Well, it looks like I may not be able to run tonight - I’m not a big fan of running in the rain, and according to the hour by hour forecast for my region (note that this isn’t actually my zipcode, though it is somewhat near - my obligatory nod to privacy), it’s supposed to be raining off and on all night. Given that the heat index is hovering around 90° now, I think I may just bag it for tonight and try again in the morning. After all, I’ve already deviated wildly from my training schedule for the week (’cuz of the ankle and all) - what’s one more change?

I’m back!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2004

I just got back from my first post-sprain run, and it went great! I only did three miles (both as a nod to the ankle and in deference to the heat and humidity of the early evening here in Northern Virginia), but the ankle held up fine throughout - hurray! It looks like the three full days of rest were plenty, so I’m now looking forward to the rest of the week’s runs anxiety-free.

Happy running, everyone!

We’ve all felt it

Scrivs is taking a break. He’s sounding pretty burnt out - I think we all get to that stage at one point or another (goodness knows I’ve been there a couple of times even just within the past year).

Last month, I ran across an article on just this topic at UIWeb: How to survive creative burnout. I’m not sure if it’ll help Scrivs or anyone else, but it reminded me during my last down time that this was a normal phenomenon. With that in mind, I was able to kickstart a project I’d been thinking about for a few months, and the combination of new technologies and new designs have proven very satisfying.

Basically, I’m trying to say that we all hit the wall at some point. The idea is to figure out how best to get over, around, beside, under, or through it - everybody will have their own method for overcoming burnout, and I hope Scrivs (and anyone else in his situation) can get through it with a minimum of hassle.

Hesitation

Well, it looks like the ankle’s still not quite up to running - I got out of bed this morning and felt just a bit too much sharpness in it to risk the run. There’s always hope for tomorrow, though!

Improvements

The ankle’s feeling a bit better - so much so that I fully expect to (try to) run my scheduled 3 miles in the morning. I guess one of the benefits of having had bad sprains in the past is that you get used to the healing process; I’m more comfortable making the sort of run/don’t-run judgment I’ll have to make in the morning now than I would’ve been five years ago. So thanks, volleyball, for all the ankle damage - who knew it would come in so handy?
