Texas just got a little dumber

Friday, May 28th, 2004

I don’t mean this as a slight against Texas in general - Lacie and I are still thinking about moving there, after all - but one of my favorite philosophers has just jumped shipped from A&M and will be joining Indiana-Bloomington’s faculty in the fall. From Bryan Leiter’s blog: Philosopher Colin Allen from A&M to Indiana.

Oh, and on the cool-stuff-found-by-following-links front, Allen’s currently co-editing a book for the MIT Press with Rob Skipper, who was a grad student at Maryland when I first started the program.

Dave reveals a massive redesign

Take a look at the new mezzoblue, codenamed proton (the previous version is now called radar). Dave’s pulled off an interesting feat, to say the least - there are lots of fun opportunities to explore the interface. I’ve already earmarked a couple of nifty ideas from the new treatment for use in a later project of my own.

What breed is that doggy in the window?

Friday, May 21st, 2004

Cool article at the New York Times on a recent study on dogs - turns out some geneticists (those darn scientists!) have discovered some interesting facts about the genetic relationships among the various breeds. They’re saying they can correctly identify a dog’s breed 99% of the time from a DNA sample, which is pretty good.

Be sure to check out the supporting graphic, too.
