Violations

So I’ve been browsing around some government and election sites lately, and I’ve been a bit - well, ‘appalled’ is the word I think I’m looking for. How long ago did section 508 hit the scene? How easy is it to check for the simplest levels of compliance? How can the whitehouse.gov team justify failing the ADA requirements? How can georgewbush.com and johnkerry.com justify their lack of accessibility? (Though Kerry’s site does do a better job with logistical accessibility; his homepage looks to weigh in at just over one-tenth of GWB’s, making it much more slow-connection-friendly - score one for us Democrats!)

While I understand that no one is out there enforcing 508 for non-governmental sites, shouldn’t something be done about the failure of major government sites to live up to the nation’s laws? Especially given that said laws have been in force for several years? How long does it take to write some alt text, for goodness sake? Shoot, Defense was able to do it, and Treasury gets by with just a warning….
