Waaah!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2004

I wanna go to The Building of Basecamp workshop - I’m even going to be in Chicago the week beforehand for a wedding. No way I could stay over for the week, though… especially not with a honeymoon coming up in early September.

The official site is here.

David Heinemeier Hansson’s announcement of the workshop is here. He’s flying in from the Continent, even.

While I’m at it

So I’m sitting here, basking in the afterglow of fixing my archive title problem, and I’m thinking there’s something else I might as well change while I’m mucking around with the internals of the blog.

Voila! The blogroll that once graced the sidebar is gone, replaced with a list of recommended non-personal sites, technologies, and applications. As it turns out, I wasn’t using that blogroll very much anyway (at least, not once I found bloglines), so it was pretty much just taking up space.

I couldn’t resist making a couple of minor stylistic tweaks while I was in there, too, so now the sidebar links are normal weight and the headings are letterspaced just a bit to make them stand out more (and no, I don’t plan on stealing any sheep in the forseeable future).

Long overdue fix

Tuesday, March 30th, 2004

While browsing through my traffic logs, I recently became aware of a problem with the site that I’m somewhat embarassed to admit. As you may or may not have noticed, all of the individual entry pages had the same title (archives ¤ culann.com). The problems with this naming issue (often seen on dynamic sites) are most obvious to searchers; try running this search on Google. If all goes well, you’ll see a long list of individual entries from this blog. Now imagine (if it wasn’t the case when you looked at the search results) that all of these entries began with archives ¤ culann.com. Would you know where to begin looking for, well, anything?

Fear not for the future! I just added the code required to properly title each individual entry. Search engines should pick up on the new titles over the next few cycles (though how long that’ll take will vary according to your preferred site). Soon, my lapse of usability judgement will be memorialized only by this entry - and any cached copies of the site that are floating around out there.

Apologies

Tuesday, March 30th, 2004

Ack - Sorry for the low traffic here in the last week or so; between school, work, and wedding planning I haven’t had as much time to write as I’d like to. I’ve got several posts in the pipeline (as it were), but I just haven’t been able to get ‘em done and out the door. Rest assured, though - more is coming.

Decisions, decisions

Saturday, March 27th, 2004

My only explanation for this post is that I got impatient. I just couldn’t wait ’til the deadline for entries closed, so here you go:

As I mentioned a few days ago, I’ve finished and submitted my Version 2 entry for March. The selected site this month was for the Cooperative Bug Isolation (CBI) Project, which is an effort by several computer science grad students (and their advisors) to gather and analyze data on how software fails in real-world scenarios. Linux users (and this is important) who visit the site can download specially-modified versions of some open-source applications (like the GIMP, Gaim, and Evolution) that monitor their own performance during usage and report back to the Project staff occasionally with the data.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on the process I used while building my entry - instead, I’d like to talk about a few of (possibly controversial) decisions I made during the process. It may be helpful to go take a look at the entry before I begin.
