Hrm

Monday, January 19th, 2004

Couple of things went on this weekend - I started working seriously on the codebase for the new Prydain Guide and Atlas systems, I finished Chris Crawford’s The Art of Interactive Design, and I spent way too much time in a bit of a funk.

Of these, the only one I’ll go into at this point is Crawford’s book. Having just finished Don Norman’s The Design of Everyday Things, I’ve got to say I was a little disappointed on the whole. While I was able to draw some interesting things out of the more technical aspects of the discussion, the many digressions into (somehwat questionable) philosophy, history, and biology detracted from the project more than they added (in my opinion, of course). The book could’ve benefited from one more run-through by a hard-nosed editor, I think…

Pardon the brevity

I’d write more, but I’m tired from a full day of fun fun fun meeting and team-building (my team won - we must be the best-constructed of the bunch!). Instead, I’ll just point you to The Perfect 404 at A List Apart.

And yes, you nagging URL-hacking peoples, I fully intend to get around to customizing my 404 pages over this long weekend (hurray for President’s Day!)

19 Jan 2004 Edit: Alas, I didn’t get to the long-awaited 404 page coding this weekend. Maybe when I next get some free time (sometime in March?)

Unproductive but Hopeful

Thursday, January 15th, 2004

I’ve been having a bit of a problem at work over the last several days - I’m recoding a system (it’s been released as a prototype for a few months and there’s some significant functionality that needs to be added), and after an initial flurry of activity I suddenly s l o w e d   d o w n.

For a while, I couldn’t really figure out why I was being so much less productive, but it finally hit me: I’ve finally created something I really enjoy looking at. For once, I’m completely happy with the visual design of a system I’ve created. Granted, it’s not the best looking thing around (I’m guessing Basecamp is going to blow the doors off of my baby), but there’s just something about it that makes me perfectly content to sit at my terminal and browse around in the system, incomplete as it might be. Hopefully, the completed version will meet the functional requirements of its users as well as it meets my aesthetic ones.

Oh, and did I mention that this app bears the fruits of all my book- and life-learnin’ in application development? From error handling to user interface design (the latter newly enhanced by having read Don Norman’s The Design of Everyday Things), I’m pouring everything I’ve got into this puppy. Let’s see what we can do…

Better and better

Basecamp just keeps looking better and better. It’s really nice to see a truly well-designed web application on the horizon, and from the glimpses we’ve gotten so far, Basecamp appears to be just such an app.

Imitation is the sincerest form

In the spirit of Ye Olde ColorMatch 5k, we’ve now got ColorMatch Remix. Kicks butt, works in Mozilla, doesn’t refuse my connection when I try to hit it. Go CMRMX!
