Not ready for primetime

Wednesday, August 27th, 2003

As I’m sure everyone knows by now, the CSS Zen Garden is one of the coolest things going. I’ve been trying to get a design completed for submission off and on for a few weeks now, and so far this is the best I’ve come up with:
blue sunset - unlinked due to linkrot. Still not quite there, so I think I’m going to try a different tactic altogether.

CSS Background Images

Here’s a problem for someone smarter than me.

I’m trying to craft a page with an empty gutter on the left, a 1px vertical line, and content on the right of the line. I want to place an image in the bottom left corner of the screen that is divided by the vertical line and is fixed on the screen (doesn’t scroll). This, it turns out, is very hard.

I’ve been trying to get around the issue by putting fixed attachment background images, but the second image just won’t stay put. Sigh.

I finally broke down and created a very tall image use as the background (left bottom, fixed) for the body element. Sigh. Stupid workarounds.

Choices

Well, I’ve completed a design for the aforementioned ReUseit competition (see it here), but now I have to decide whether to enter it into the competition, submit it as an exhibition, or use it as a first draft and keep working. Hmm.

Holy crap

I try to stay out of political discussions most of the time, but every once in a while something comes up that really gets my goat. Politics & Science is an impressive website devoted to exploring exactly how the Bush regime has gone about misusing and abusing science in the course of pursuing its idealogical goals. I’d heard about the breast cancer situation (Lacie used to work for the National Breast Cancer Coalition, and she was railing about the change to NCI’s website when it first happened), but much of the other content surprised and saddened me…

Guess I know where my vote’ll be going next year (as if I didn’t already).

Intriguing…

In the spirit of the W3Remix, we’ve now got ReUseit.com - a contest to redesign Jakob Nielsen’s useit.com site using modern, standards-based techniques. Awesome!
