New reads

June 20, 2003 – 9:22 am

I just finished Garth Nix’s Mister Monday last night, and I’m very excited by the prospect of an entire series in his strange, clever world.

Here’s the basic plot: the Architect created the universe and the House from Nothing. For a long time, She and the Trustees (Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, etc.) watched over the universe from the House and recorded everything that happened. Then, She went away. She left a Will, however, that told how things were to run in Her absence.

The Trustees didn’t want to execute the Will, so they broke it into seven parts and hid it around the universe. The Will however, being sentient, continually sought to escape and to be executed - and in Mister Monday, the first part of the Will gets free. The rest of the book focuses on a boy named Arthur Penhaligon (love the last name - but is it too close to Pendragon?) and his adventures…

Nix has a fertile, engaging imagination - His Old Kingdom trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen) is beloved-bookshelf material for sure - and he uses it to its fullest here. I can’t wait ’til Tuesday comes.

  2. Do you know who the boy on the cover is? (The one who is supposed to be Arthur) is he a real boy or is he just a boy that the art designer made up?
