Template Magic

Monday, April 21st, 2003

After a bit of inspiration from Caveat Lector’s Movable Type tutorials, I’ve tweaked the templates for this site a bit. Here’s hoping the result isn’t an inexcusable eyesore.

History, War, and Consequences

Looting at the National Museum of Iraq. One more consequence of an ill-conceived war…

Argh, Resolutions!

Monday, April 14th, 2003

Just took a look at my New Year’s Resolutions to see how I was doing (I figure if I look once a quarter I’m doing ok). Quick synopsis:

  • be able to run 12 miles at a time by December
Sigh. Haven’t worked much on this, yet. If I keep with the plan I thought of last night, though, it’s doable. We’ll see how today goes, then take it one day at a time
  • read (on average) 1 book a week for the year - and keep track of what I’ve read
Ridiculously easy - I finished my 49th for the year last night (Anne Ursu’s The Disapparation of James - fantastic!). The slightly harder part has been the recent amendment of this resolution, in which I only get to buy one book for every five I read. So far so good with that.
  • move in with Lacie by the end of the year
On track - we’re looking for houses and apartments now, and I’ve given my notice to Reston Landing so I’m homeless on June 1st.
  • obtain a new job by the end of the year
This one’s been abandoned. I added it in a fit of job frustration at the beginning of the year, but I’ve since returned to contentment at work. Add to that the Big Move Lacie and I have planned for next year, and it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to go looking for a new job at the moment.
  • go to the gym at least twice a week for the year - starting after we return from the Dominican
Ouch. No comment, other than stating that I haven’t done well on this one.
  • write - write early, write often, write lengthily
I’m about 50-50 here - I’ve written more this year (even wrote an essay on web application development), but I’m still not writing as often as I’d like to. I’ll keep working on it.

All in all, not too bad, but not that good, either. Let’s see how Q2 goes.

Somethin’ to do

Slow day at the office (big surprise), so I took a jaunt to Technorati’s Top 100. Interesting stuff going on as usual.

Anyways, through the Top 100 I ran across the Friday Five. My answers to this Friday’s questions:

  1. 12 since I can remember, starting with my folks’ house in NC, progressing through 2 dorm rooms at NCSSM and 5 at Carolina, and I’m in my fourth place since moving to the DC Metro area in 1998. Of course, I’m getting ready to move again in June, but since that hasn’t happened yet I won’t count it.
  2. I’m thinking that my current apartment is my favorite - it’s easily the best place I’ve lived since I left my parents’ house. It’s also the most real-place I’ve lived since I’ve been on my own (all the others were student housing of one sort or another). I like the feeling of being in a real home, something that could be more than temporary if I wanted it to be.
  3. I find preparations for moving stressful - all the packing, all the cleaning, all the paperwork. I enjoy the moving itself, and I really enjoy unpacking. There’s just something about the filling-in of a blank canvas that I find appealing.
  4. I think location and price are equally important… There’s a tradeoff between the two, but neither trumps the other.
  5. Features of my dream house? That’s easy - I only care about two rooms, the kitchen and the library. My dream house has to have both, and they’ve both got to rock (how’s that for precise?).
