Man with Poor Taste

Tuesday, February 11th, 2003

Can I just say that it’s an out-and-out shame that Chicago got so many Oscar nominations this morning? Lacie and I saw it on Saturday, and I was terribly disappointed. I thought it was exceedingly ordinary - the acting, the singing, the production values… Nothing stood out. And here it gets nods for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actor, and TWO Supporting Actresses (though I have to say, John C. Reilly and Queen Latifah were the best parts of the movie)…? Maybe everyone’s right to question my tastes in movies (and, by extension, literature).

Short-timing it

Not much going on this morning - had a meeting with some folks from our new organization earlier and I’m heading out at noon. Should be a good afternoon, though. I’m swinging down to Occoquan (where’d that name come from, I wonder?), Virginia to check out the Irish Collection for a Valentine’s Day gift for Lacie. I’ve got something in mind, but I’m not sure how much she’ll like it. Plus, I don’t know her ring size. Hmm. Maybe this isn’t such a good plan.

Anyways, after that I’m off to lunch with Craig and to class. Woohoo, for the life of the mind.

Technophile

So I got a new toy at lunchtime today - an iPAQ 3955. I feel like Jack Nicholson coulda been talking about me when he asked (in Batman) “Where does he get those wonderful toys?”

Charles and I have been playing with it off and on since I got back with it. I can’t wait to check it out tomorrow during class (I got the folding keyboard, too, so I’m going to try taking notes with it). Hopefully it’ll make the whole process of blogging Pat’s class that much easier.

Sub-Genius

You ever want to be smarter? I don’t mean just a little smarter - I mean a lot. I used to think (and, in all honesty, still do a lot of the time) that I was pretty bright. One of the sharper crayons in the box, if you catch my drift. Then I started doing web work. More particularly, I started researching web issues online.

There went my bubble. I’m continually running across people like Zeldman and Kottke and Joel and … It’s a little frustrating, but also inspiring. I mean, hey, all it takes is one good idea, right? Then you’re in the community, then you can feed off of everyone else and they can feed off of you.

Tangentially related: I believe Newton said that (paraphrasing) if he could see very far, it was because he stood on the shoulders of the giants who came before him. When I was looking at grad schools, one of my top priorities was the quality of the students, since you learn at least as much by talking with them, hashing out ideas in the trenches, as you do in class with the big-name professors. It seems that the web can/could be a lot like that. If you can get into the mix, you’ve got giants’ shoulders right there, and tons of smart people to talk to all around. Here’s hoping.

Domain frustrations

Argh… Still waiting for Domainsarefree to get back to me - I registered turrean.com with them a few days ago, and I can’t log in to the control panel to point the domain at this server. Basically, turrean’s dead in the water until I can get this resolved.

I’ve emailed them twice, and have yet to receive a response. C’mon, already!
